A few details. Endless possibilities.
The last small spell
A village magician has one spell left. A storm is coming, a child has lost a keepsake, and the mayor demands a miracle. Which problem deserves the magic? Use a tone that feels intriguing. Keep this to 1000 words, one main setting and at most three characters. Open with an action and end after one meaningful change.
The Short Story Prompt Generator helps writers choose a focused premise for flash fiction or stories up to 5,000 words. Select a genre and target writing length, then start with a character, setting, central conflict and opening line. The length setting describes the story you intend to write, not the size of the generated prompt. Free seeds need no account. Signed-in AI planning can turn the premise into scenes with word budgets and locked facts.

Short Story Writing Prompts by Genre
Choose one conflict that can change in a single sitting. A mystery can turn on one piece of evidence; a romance on one conversation; a fantasy on one use of an unusual power. Avoid needing a second cast just to explain the premise.
Flash Fiction Prompts
For 250 words: a traveler has one minute to return something they secretly want to keep. Start at the decision and end with its cost.
For 250 words: two neighbors exchange the same object for years. Today one adds a note. Leave the shared history in the details.
Short Story Ideas for Beginners
Use a place you know and give someone a small urgent goal there. Try a character returning a borrowed item, admitting a mistake or waiting for someone who may not arrive. A familiar setting lets you spend attention on the choice.
How to Turn a Prompt Into a Short Story
Select a target length before outlining. At 1,000 words, four scenes of roughly 250 words can give you an opening, complication, choice and consequence. The word budget is a planning constraint, not a requirement to stop a scene at an exact count.
Common Short Story Mistakes to Avoid
Do not spend half the word budget explaining the world before anything changes. Avoid an ending that solves the problem with information the reader could never have known. Give the protagonist a consequential action, even when the ending stays ambiguous.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this write a finished story?
The free tool gives a writing seed. AI customization shapes that seed; a story project can develop it into a scene outline. This version does not generate complete chapters.
Can I use it for free without signing up?
Yes. Random prompts, the prompt library, copying and browser saves are free and need no account. Google sign-in gives each verified account 6 AI credits once. A custom prompt costs 1 credit, an outline 5 and a revision 3. Remaining credits are shown before generation; failed or safety-blocked requests return the reserved cost.
What gets saved when I develop an idea?
Browser-saved prompt cards stay in that browser. After Google sign-in, story projects, briefs, locked facts and outline versions are saved to your account. Sign in with the same Google account to return to them. Project reading, fact editing and text export do not use AI credits. Export work you want to keep independently.
Can I change the details of a prompt?
Yes. Treat a free seed as a starting point and edit it yourself, or add constraints in AI mode. A project lets you lock facts before asking for a revised outline.
What content can I request?
Non-explicit creative writing, including romance, suspense and atmospheric horror. AI requests and results are checked for explicit sexual content, sexual content involving minors, graphic gore, targeted abuse and instructions for serious real-world harm.
